Oracle’s AI Pivot: Why 12,000 Jobs Were Cut in India
The IT business has a hundred today with Oracle, which is one of the best software companies in the world. This week the company announced a ‘restructuring’ and sacked about 30,000 working people worldwide.
India, home to one of Oracle‘s largest engineering teams, was the hardest hit. What went wrong in India?
1. The Numbers: A Significant Blow to India
While the company hasn’t released an official public count, multiple reports suggest that 12,000 employees in India lost their jobs this week.
- Scale: This represents nearly 40% of Oracle’s workforce in India (which was around 30,000 strong).
- The Global Picture: Worldwide, the cuts affected about 18% of their total staff.
- Departments Hit: The layoffs weren’t just in one area. They impacted everything from junior developers to high-level managers in departments like Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Cerner Healthcare.
2. Why is this happening? The “AI Spending Spree”
It might seem odd that a profitable company would sack over 5,000 staff, but the truth comes down to one thing: Artificial Intelligence.
- The Cost of AI: It takes a huge investment to build the data centers that power AI and to buy the advanced chips (like graphics processing units, or GPUs) required. Oracle, for example, is pouring billions of dollars into this effort while attempting to catch up with rivals such as Microsoft and Amazon.
- Freeing Up Cash: Analysts estimate that by cutting these 30,000 jobs, Oracle can save between $8 billion and $10 billion. This money is being immediately redirected into their AI infrastructure projects.
- Changing Roles: Oracle is moving away from “traditional” software roles and focusing heavily on AI-skilled talent.
3. How it Happened: The “6 AM Email”
The procedure with the layoffs has caused much of a post on social media. A lot of employees from all over India and US have posted that they received an email at 6.00AM from ‘Oracle Leadership’ saying today will be your last day.
- Immediate Lockout: In many cases, access to internal systems and emails was cut off almost immediately after the notification.
- Human Cost: Stories have gone viral of long-time veterans—some with the company for 20 years—being let go via these automated emails without a phone call from their managers.
4. What Happens Next?
For those affected in India, Oracle has reportedly offered a severance package that includes:
- 15 days of salary for every year of service.
- A “top-up” of two months’ salary for those who leave amicably.
- Payment for the notice period and leave encashment.
The big worry? Reports suggest this might not be the end. Internal sources and analysts warn that a second round of layoffs could be coming within the next month as the company continues to tighten its belt to fund its AI future.
The Bottom Line
Oracle isn’t in financial trouble—in fact, its revenue is growing. However, the company is in a massive hurry to win the “AI War,” and it is willing to significantly shrink its traditional workforce to make room (and budget) for the future of automation.
