Chrome’s New Superpower: “Auto Browse”
For years, Chrome has been able to “Autofill” your name or credit card. Auto Browse is the next level. Instead of just filling boxes, it actually navigates the web like a human would—clicking buttons, scrolling through pages, and jumping between tabs to get a job done.
What can it actually do?
Google showed off several real-world examples that usually take us forever to do manually:
- Planning a Trip: You can ask, “Find me the cheapest weekend to fly to Chicago in July and stay at [Hotel Name].” Gemini will check multiple dates on Expedia and hotel sites, compare the prices, and give you the final answer.
- Shopping from a Photo: If you see a cool party setup in a photo, you can tell Gemini: “Go to Etsy, find decorations like the ones in this picture, and add them to my cart. Stay under $75.”
- Admin Chores: It can fill out long, boring registration forms, file your expense reports by pulling data from your receipts, and even help you renew your driver’s license.
3 Other Major Changes in Chrome
While “Auto Browse” is the star, three other features were added to make Chrome feel like a “Command Center”:
1. The Permanent Gemini Sidebar
Gemini isn’t just a separate website anymore. It now lives in a Side Panel on the right side of your browser. You can keep your work open in the main window while asking Gemini to summarize a long article or compare products in the side panel.
2. “Nano Banana” Image Editing
This is a built-in AI tool that lets you edit images directly in your browser. If you find a photo of a room you like, you can tell Gemini to “change the color of the sofa to green,” and it will edit the image right there without you needing to download it.
3. Personal Intelligence
Chrome can now “connect” to your other Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Maps.
- Example: You can ask, “Does this flight work with my schedule?” and Gemini will check your Google Calendar for you.
The “Fine Print” (Security & Cost)
Because letting an AI click around your bank or shopping sites is a big deal, Google added some rules:
- You Are the Boss: Gemini will handle the hard work, but it will not click “Buy” or “Post.” It gets everything ready and then asks you to click the final button.
- Paid Only (For Now): This feature is currently rolling out in the US for people with Google AI Pro ($20/month) or Ultra ($250/month) subscriptions.
- Daily Limits: Pro users get about 20 “Auto Browse” tasks per day, while Ultra users get 200.
