OpenAI’s New Superapp: ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas in One Workspace

OpenAI’s New Superapp ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas in One Workspace

On March 19, 2026, it revealed the largest change of course in the company‘s history yet. The new vision is to build a unified desktop superapp that combines ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas browser into one application. Here is everything you need to know to make sense of it.

What is the OpenAI Superapp?

Over the last year OpenAI has released a number of specialized tools. But a “mass of assorted apps” caused “app fatigue,” as a user had to go back and forth between dozens of tabs and windows to do a job. The superapp addresses this with three big tools:

  • ChatGPT: Your friendly conversational assistant for writing and brainstorming.
  • Codex: A high-performance engine that helps professional developers build software.
  • Atlas: An AI-native web browser that lets you research the internet using AI built directly into the search bar.

Why the Change? (The “Side Quest” Problem)

Fidji Simo, OpenAI‘s Head of Applications, told staff that “side quests” the too many small, unrelated projects were a distraction.

“Ultimately, that fragmentation slowed us down and made it harder to hit the quality bar we want,” Simo wrote in an internal memo.

Thus, the team want to move away from acting as a blarray of startups. This, they hope, will allow them to operate as one unified platform. This will allow the team to better compete against companies such as Anthropic, whose ‘Claude Code’ tool is currently drawing a significant number of professionals.

Key Features to Expect

Firstly, the superapp concentrates on Agentic AI (or ‘Doer’) mode. This is an app that does, as opposed to one that talks. In particular, the AI can carry out challenging actions using your computer (e.g. generating code, fixing bugs, searching through your history to find relevant documents).

Secondly, the deep integrations. With OpenAI having built the Atlas browser directly into the application, the AI can “watch” what you are looking at. So you can ask ChatGPT to summarize a web page or even fetch data from a live page into your code on-the-fly.

Lastly, the company is giving the Desktop Focus pre-eminence. The mobile application is remaining the same at its current form, and this superapp is designed for desktop users who perform high-productivity tasks such as coding, business analysis.

When Will it Launch?

While hasn‘t provided release date yet, the company has already redirected its priorities: and OpenAI President Greg Brockman is now in charge of the engineering transformation. In the nearer term, we see the first Codex features available to users in the coming months, and the complete “superapp” experience following in 2026.
