X Global Outage & New Dislike Button

X Global Outage & New Dislike Button What Happened March 26

Town Square of the world, Town Square of X(Twitter), had somewhat of a hectic day on March 26, 2026. If you tried to check in a feed today and received a “Something went wrong” message, you weren‘t alone.

Below is a very quick summary of the worldwide outage, then it‘s time for the big “dislike” announcement.

Part 1: The Global Outage

This morning, the X went down for millions of us in the US, UK, India and many other countries.

  • What happened? They couldn‘t refresh their timelines, they couldn‘t see their posts, and a lot of the users got logged out of there accounts randomly.
  • The Scale: Outage trackers (like Downdetector) saw a massive spike, with over 30,000 reports in the US alone.
  • The Cause: Not officially having a tech “Post-Mortem” on X, experts are saying this was one of the biggest server side collapses. X has been getting rid of its tech staff over the last few years, hence all the more “hiccups”.

Part 2: The New “Dislike” Button

With the knowledge the website was beginning to reappear Musk declared The Dislike Button. However…

How it works:

In contrast to clicking “Like” on Facebook or a “Downvote” on Reddit, clicking this button is not for entertainment.

  • Verified Only: For now, only people who pay for X Premium (the blue checkmark) can see and use the dislike button.
  • The “Why”: Musk stated this is to stop bot manipulation. If anyone could dislike a post, bot armies could “attack” a person and hide their posts. By making it a paid feature, it becomes too expensive for bot creators to abuse it.
  • It’s Private: When a verified user hits dislike, it‘s not a Dislike Count on the posts. It‘s a signal to X‘s algorithm saying “this is an irrelevant, spammy, AI mainpost” and the post is hidden from anyone else seeing it.

Why This Matters for You

This is a significant change to the way the machine works. X is attempting to turn the “blue checkmark” into a digital police state, by granting “voting power” exclusively to paid users.

The Pros: Might finally put an end to all those pesky “crypto-scam” bots and AI spam clogging up comment sections.

The Cons: Critics argue this creates a “two-tier” system where only people who pay have a say in what content is considered “good” or “bad.”
