OpenAI Flips the Switch: Ads are Coming to ChatGPT

OpenAI Flips the Switch: Ads are Coming to ChatGPT

The era of “completely clean” AI is changing. As of February 10, 2026, OpenAI has officially started testing advertisements inside ChatGPT. If you use the free version or the new budget “Go” plan, your chat screen is about to look a little different.

Here is everything you need to know about this major shift in simple terms.

What Exactly is Changing?

For the first time since it launched, ChatGPT will show “Sponsored” content. However, OpenAI is trying to do this carefully so it doesn’t ruin your experience.

  • Where are the ads? They appear in a dedicated section below the AI’s response. They are clearly labeled as “Sponsored” and are visually separated from the actual conversation.
  • Do they change the answers? OpenAI insists that ads do not influence what the AI says. If you ask for a recipe, the AI gives you the best recipe it can find; it won’t force a specific brand of flour on you just because they paid for an ad.
  • Who will see them? Right now, testing is limited to adult users in the United States who are on:
    • The Free Tier: The standard version most people use.
    • The “Go” Plan: A newer $8/month tier that gives you more features than free, but still includes ads to keep the price low.
  • Who is safe? If you pay for Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise plans, your experience remains 100% ad-free.

Why is OpenAI Doing This?

Running “GenAI” (Generative AI) is incredibly expensive. Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, it uses massive amounts of computing power and electricity.

  1. Paying the Bills: OpenAI is spending billions on infrastructure. Ads help cover the costs of keeping the free version available for everyone.
  2. Making Money Beyond Subs: While millions of people pay for subscriptions, billions more don’t. Ads allow OpenAI to make money from the “free” users.
  3. Growth: With a rumored IPO (initial public offering) on the horizon, OpenAI needs to prove it can make money in multiple ways, not just through monthly fees.

The “AI Ad War”: OpenAI vs. Anthropic

This move has sparked a “spicy” rivalry. Just last week during Super Bowl LX, OpenAI’s biggest rival, Anthropic, aired a clever 60-second commercial.

The ad showed a person asking an AI for help, only for the AI to pivot into a weird, awkward sales pitch for shoes. The commercial ended with the tagline: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

Anthropic is betting that users will get annoyed by ads and switch to their chatbot, Claude, which they promise will stay “safety-first and ad-free.” OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, fired back on social media, calling Anthropic’s portrayal of “intrusive ads” dishonest.

Your Privacy: What Happens to Your Data?

The biggest concern with ads is always privacy. Here is the breakdown of how your data is used for these ads:

  • Contextual Matching: Ads are mostly based on what you are talking about right now. If you’re asking about hiking boots, you might see an ad for an outdoor store.
  • No “Selling” Chats: OpenAI says they don’t sell your personal chat history to advertisers. Advertisers only see “aggregated” data (like how many people clicked a link), not who said what.
  • Safety Limits: Ads won’t appear next to sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics.

Pro Tip: You can go into your settings to turn off “Ad Personalization” or even clear your ad history if you want more privacy.

The Bottom Line

Ads in AI were likely inevitable. Just like Google and Facebook before it, ChatGPT is moving from a “cool experiment” to a massive business. For now, the ads are tucked away at the bottom of the screen—but the “AI Ad War” between OpenAI and Anthropic is just getting started.
